WHERE LANGUAGE LEARNING IS A GAME

WELCOME TO JAMES ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ARTS SCHOOL

About Our School

Learning and Growing, All Day Every Day

We are a full-service English language school located in beautiful Ma'anshan city, Anhui province, China. We offer fun and challenging English language instruction to children ages 3 to 12 and adults. Our dedicated team of teachers and staff provide high quality instruction to all of our learners, ensuring they become effective communicators. With children and adults alike, we use story-telling, games, communicative tasks, music, and direct instruction to challenge and entertain. It is also our work to grow our faculty, not only as language instructors but also as communicators of other languages. We offer Chinese classes, too, and bimonthly cultural excursions to surrounding sites such as Nanjing, the Yellow Mountains, and Mt. Jiuhua. Language learning happens in and out of the classroom. What we offer to our teachers and students reflects that truth.

Our Mission

To Build Global Communicators the Fun Way

Learning a language is like playing a game. The more you practice, the better you get. As with any game, though, language learners aren’t rewarded by how fast they learn a language but rather to what extent they can communicate effectively. We endeavor to teach the foundation of language and give plenty of practice so that our learners are skilled and confident enough to create meaningful relationships all over the world.

"Basic Training"

February 2017

Family Picnic

Lantern Festival

February 2017

Some of the less obvious challenges of teaching three-year-olds to speak a foreign language deal with behavior management. Children at such a young age aren't easily accustomed to a classroom setting absent of their parents. The consensus among many of our parents is that additional schooling  will only train their children faster how to behave acceptably in class, so we recently started offering a discipline class nicknamed "Basic Training." Participants  wear military costumes and  pretend to     be training for enlistment in the armed forces. Unsurprisingly, only boys have signed up for it so far, but it is suitable for girls, too. The learners tell stories, sing nursery rhymes, and read children's books all while becoming more independent, sociable, and well-behaved.

The family of one of our students owns the company"JinCaiDi", a nationally known producer of Chinese sauces, condiments, and tofu products. The second week in February, on a very sunny and breezy Sunday, we went to the countryside for a tour of their factory, a sumptuous 20-course lunch, and an afternoon of kite-flying and picnicking at their farm. We toured most areas of the more than 1000-strong factory. Of particular interest were the sauce production line, the tofu marinating center where the tofu soaks in tea for weeks before it is ready for packaging, and the sauce fermentation area, where all the factory's sauces age 30 days before packaging. Lunch included steamed fish, oyster soup, braised pork, ginger steamed shrimp, bottle-nosed turtle, beef hot pot, preserved egg, and much more.

Dragons are the most important symbol in Chinese culture, and Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in China. Even after the end of the eight-day public holiday, the festivities continue until the first full moon, which fell on February 11 this year. We celebrated the so-called "Lantern Festival"with several of our students at their family's ancestral village outside of Ma'anshan. We played Capture the Flag and Sharks and Minnows, then went to a local restaurant where we were treated to a banquet hosted by one of our students' families. When the moon had risen, the dragon (a series of interconnected lanterns, each held by a steward) swept through local businesses and homes. The dragon stopped along the way, allowing children to retrieve candy from its mouth and rub its tongue for good luck.

Our English Program

Dream. Engage. Succeed.

James English Language and Arts School provides end-to-end English training for both children and adults. From 3 years-old on, our students learn English through story-telling, role-play, dialogues, singing, dancing, arts and crafts, chanting, games, and much more.

For adults we offer a global English course that immediately gets them speaking authentic English. With topics ranging from hotels, airports, restaurants, and shops, to the office, at home, and on the go, our adult English course prepares our students not merely to "survive" in an English-speaking country, but also to flourish.

Whether you are a hopeful parent or determined adult, we have the solution for you. For a private consultation call one of our team members and start your journey today.

Young Learners

Fun. Challenging. Effective.

Your child will discover and develop their spoken English fluency through a variety of activities. Advanced Young Learners

Social. Engaging. Enriching.

Starting at 8 years-old, advanced young learners overcome all trace of shyness and learn to speak out. We train them to communicate with speakers all around the world, not simply with their teachers and classmates. This course is geared towards instilling participants with independent learning skills. Set up a demo lesson today.

The Dawn of a New Year

January 2017

2017 is the year of the Rooster. The preceding sign is the Monkey and the sign next year is the Dog. The Rooster is the 10th sign in the 12-sign cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The years of the Rooster include 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029... The Rooster is the epitome of fidelity and punctuality. Before there were alarm clocks, people everywhere relied on the rooster’s crow to signal the beginning of a new day. Roosters are also associated with exorcising evil spirits—all good meanings for the start of a new year!

Information Session

January 2017

Florida State University, in Tallahassee, FL, has an excellent TEFL certification program at the Center for Intensive English Studies. They not only introduce participants to the theories and methodologies surrounding effective foreign language teaching, they also give students plenty of practice teaching real students. We were so happy to be allowed to present at their information session. Next week we intend to present at Tallahassee Community College. If you are interested in scheduling a one-on-one virtual information session, fill out a contact form and we will respond shortly.

"Star Student" Cindy

December 2016

This week our "star student" is Cindy. She's been learning English with us for a year now. When she started, she was so afraid to make a mistake, she barely spoke, let alone with any confidence. Last week, however, she won the gold medal award for her flawless performance on our midterm. Now it shows: she is much more confident speaking out and experimenting with words. We are so happy she has reached this milestone in her language learning journey! Keep up the good work, Cindy!

Midterm Results Are In

December 2016

Nothing's more fulfilling to a teacher than seeing his students go all out on review day. They soldiered through the last five lessons, then came assessments. Did they understand what their teacher was asking them? Were they answering in full sentences? Was their grammar sound? Did their pronunciation have the ring of a native speaker? After giving them each an oral assessment, their instructor decided who took the gold, who the silver, and who the bronze. Two learners were so close they both won gold medals. Silver and bronze winners gracefully accepted, knowing what they need to work on in the next term.

Sister School Grand Opening

December 2016

In December 2016, our partner school, Jiahua School, opened its sixth location in Ma'anshan. We were happy to be there to celebrate their grand opening with them. After the opening ceremony, we were given a tour of the new facilities and treated out to a banquet of fine Anhui cuisine. We wish them many years of success!
